change

academy

To provide flexibility as we encounter distance learning, we've re-opened our Change Academy program for all high school students. Our Change Academy is a series of online workshops that leverage students’ youth towards building their savings and confidence in money management. Students will work with change agents as guides to equip them for the financial responsibilities of adulthood and receive a competitive advantage towards accumulating wealth.

In eight sessions, students will have an interactive experience to learn about behavioral economics (their relationship with money), credit, budgeting, lending, generational wealth, and so much more! All sessions are free and provide real-time saving strategies for students.

Criteria and registration

  • Must be a resident of Orange County between the ages of 13-18. Students zoned in Title I schools or low to moderate-income communities will receive first priority. Additional dates will be announced for students outside of our targeted area.

  • Complete the student registration form below to enroll in the Change Academy. After acceptance into the academy, you will receive an invitation to enter our google classroom. Parental consent is required.

  • Change Academy is a combination of live and on-demand sessions that offer the flexibility to review lessons that are convenient for you. A minimum of two live sessions will be conducted by a member of 8 Cents in a Jar on a weekly basis.

  • Have access to an electronic device and internet access. Reserve Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6:00 pm - 7:15 pm for our live sessions (if you can't make it, sign up anyway. We will make it work)

  • It is recommended students must complete all modules and assessments to receive credit and qualify for prizes.

A 2017 RAND report found that incarcerated individuals participating in education programs (like financial literacy programs) were 43% less likely to return to prison. They also concluded that these individuals were 13% more likely to find employment after their release. Education not only helps these citizens live a better life following their release, it also gives them a much better chance of staying out of prison. Learn More About Our Jumpstart Financial Literacy Program. We begin working with individuals prior to their release to teach them valuable skills, such as how to open a bank account, create a budget, save money, build credit, and more. We continue to assist them once they’re back in the community to help them manage their finances moving forward.
